Your industrial production is almost certainly reliant upon your supply of water and a compliant discharge of any wastestreams. Perhaps there are also valuable resources to be recovered: heat, metals, organic materials.

The challenge is to provide water to your operations economically while ensuring a continuous supply. Produced water – greater oil recovery, compliant discharge

For every barrel of oil, 10-100 barrels of water are produced. While cleaning it of fossil fuels and chemicals sufficiently to be able to discharge it, or reuse it, we can help valuable oil deposits be recovered more efficiently. The same is true for discharges from mining operations. Engineering the selectivity and reducing fouling are key to what has conventionally been a costly process with a high membrane attrition rate.

We’re helping more of this “waste” oil to be recovered and the resulting purified water to become a valuable byproduct instead of a nuisance.

We’re helping mineral extraction become more circular by treating the liquid wastestreams more effectively and recovering mine produce that would otherwise be lost.

As an ingredient, water has to be absolutely pure. When used as a detergent or for cooling, it’s important not to let it go to waste. And membranes play a vital role in separating foodstuffs like proteins and sugars.

With enhanced membrane technologies, producers have a greater reliance on the quality of the membrane purification systems in place, with a more uniform performance and a greater rejection rate of unwanted contaminants. In some cases, precious ultrapure water is necessary, which we help produce far more efficiently.

This same ultrafiltration technology can increase the amount of process water successfully recycled and safeguard heat energy for the process. One client, for example, was able to not only “filter the unfilterable”, but also reuse the high temperature in the recycled discharge water rather than having to heat up cooler freshwater.

Maximising the yield of food and beverage production is an essential objective. With more effective membranes in place, the separation process can be far more effective, increasing the amount of sellable product significantly.

The greatest challenge is the high tendency to fouling of the membranes. Our technologies help overcome what can otherwise be a troublesome and expensive problem. Through them, ingredient water is purified more effectively, more water is recycled and the yield of the produce is increased.

Municipal

Water utilities and municipalities are pushing hard for net zero. Given that the transportation, treatment and clean discharge of water used directly by humans is often a large proportion of national energy consumption (typically 3-6%), the importance of reducing long distance transportation by recycling locally and making the treatment and reclamation processes more efficient has never been so important.

Our technologies help tap into unconventional sources of water and recycle more of it.

Beyond having a lighter footprint, however, “resource factories”, as sewage works are now sometimes referred to, can capture valuable resources from the wastewater, especially heat and organic compounds like phosphorous and nitrates.

Our technologies make reuse of water and the harvesting of phosphorous an easier reality.

Desalination

Desalination technologies have come a long, long way since the 1960s, with the cost now about 10% of what it once was. Membranes have been the key enabler. But they are still inherently problematic due to their somewhat random pore size and distribution. This leads to rapid fouling, necessitating frequent Cleaning-in-Place which in turn uses energy and chemicals, and degrades the membrane integrity.

Our technologies reduce this fouling, protecting the membrane in the process and further cutting the OPEX of desalination. Scaling and silica precipitation can be reduced and the process made far less troublesome. No longer having to do so many CIPs means the membrane lasts longer, and with a higher flux, less space is needed for more desalinated water, further reducing CAPEX.

Resource Harvesting

A host of often very valuable resources are suspended in readily available fluid streams, like municipal wastewater, desalinated water, industrial process waters and “unconventional” water like those in geothermal and desalination processes.

The issue is that many of these resources are so finely dissolved that recovering them takes an often unfeasible amount of resources. The inherent tendency of membranes to foul quickly hinders costs-efficient harvesting.

Our technologies boost the concentration process at far lower cost. With non-fouling membranes, extracting phosphorous from sewage, salt from desalination, metals from mining discharges, algae for biogas production, oils from oil sands and lithium from geothermal waters becomes an attractive proposition.

Together with our clients, we are pioneering circularity and greater autonomy for the resources we increasingly depend on for food, vehicles, building and energy.

Environmental Remediation

Many fossil fuel production processes have a legacy of wastewater that is too contaminated with chemicals and oil to be released into the ecosystem. Artificial liquid lakes in which the contaminants are contained are often expensive to clean-up.

Our technologies enhance the treatment process by preventing fouling of membranes used to purify the wastewater. By increasing the selectivity potential, more of the contaminants can be recovered efficiently and become byproducts themselves rather than be wasted. That’s a triple win: for the environment; for water; and for recovering otherwise-lost resources.

Life Sciences

Effective selective permeation is a vital part of producing the life science products our health depends on. Membrane processes are one key method to extract components such as proteins and plant extracts from liquids. And they also help make vaccines and other medicines safer by removing impurities.

A further requirement in many life science facilities is the availability of ultrapure water. Conventionally, this is expensive to produce and hard to do so at smaller scale, as the extremely fine membranes used to do so foul quickly.

Our technologies improve the selectivity of membranes, remove contaminants more effectively and produce clean water more efficiently.

Domestic

The desire of household and commercial consumers to purify their own mains water or recycle grey waters in their home, factory or office building is growing rapidly. The filter market is huge as some parts of the world struggle to provide citizens with pure, fresh water and are turning more and more to unconventional sources.

Our technologies help those membrane filters perform better and last longer. They don’t clog up as quickly, saving the consumer the trouble and expense of frequent replacement, and are more reliable in the removal of contaminants.
